The witty, Vicky Simmons is the creative behind stationary brand, Mean Mail, which is spot on funny. In her words, Beautiful cards. Brutal messages.
Her eco brand launched in 2017 and is now stocked in over 100 stores worldwide. We find out how she and her family, husband Ant and their 11 month old baba, Cass are getting on during these testing times.
How is Corona virus affecting you right now?
Coronavirus is energy zapping! Even though we’re all moving about so much less I’m dead tired by end of the day. I’m hearing this a lot from friends - I just think it’s how our bodies are reacting to this strange situation we’re all in.
How are you coping with the change?
I’m trying not to overthink it and take each day as it comes. We’ve established a routine where Ant looks after Cass from after breakfast until lunchtime nap and I get to work or do I what I want. When Cass wakes from his afternoon nap I take over and Ant does the same.
Any tips to survive the next few months
Don’t be too hard on yourself. It took me a long time to learn this lesson and I’m still trying to get to grips with it. I found a lot of comfort reading an article a friend wrote on It’s Nice That about why we shouldn’t feel forced to use all this time productively and just take a moment instead.
Get off social media. Every Christmas I come off social media for a few weeks and don’t miss it - I’m doing the same now as much as I can and it’s been a relief.
What have you learnt from the experience, so far?
It’s interesting seeing what kind of people we all are without the constraints of time (but with all the new parameters involved) especially if you are as good at procrastinating as I am. My procrastination has nowhere to hide now when my son is napping.
I keep thinking that the world is in reset mode. When I am working I'm doing backend stuff on my business and things I’ve been constantly putting off. I’m enjoying slowly transitioning out of procrastination. I’m sure it will creep back in when the world gets busy again.
What / who do you miss?
Going for a 7am swim at Leyton Leisure Lagoon.
Top three things you do to lift the spirits?
Phone calls with my mates
HIIT classes aka Joe Wicks (when I can be bothered)
Playing dance music really loud (thanks to Big Fish Little Fish Sunday Raves)
What’s the best thing that’s happened since you've been in lockdown?
Realising that jigsaws can be really soothing and so much nicer to stare at instead of your phone.
First thing you’ll do when out of isolation?
Go for a meal with my mates and not speak to my husband for 24 hours.
What you wearing whilst in isolation?
My regular clothes but only the comfortable bits. Relaxed waistbands all the way.
